The emergence of Graz-West into the 21st Century
The project area in Graz-West covers an area of around 750 ha and has around 32,000 residents (status: 2001).
Graz-West - which is the area to the west of the southern railway line and along the Alte Poststraße - had already developed into a large trading and industrial area by the 18th and 19th Centuries due to the potential offered by its large area and its convenient situation. Even today, the area still suffers from intense polarisation caused by the conflicts of the demands made on industrial zones and on residential areas: ever-changing work processes and increased globalisation generate an increasing imbalance in the structure of the city. The Urban_Link Graz-West programme intends on eradicating these problems and introducing sustained development for all involved.
